Avoid Publishing Scams
Avoid Publishing Scams
Your book matters. So does your trust.
Sadly, scammers are pretending to be Dublin Book Publishing to get money and personal details from authors. Here's how to spot them, check who you're really talking to, and report anything that feels off.
The 5-second check: Real emails from us only ever end in @dublinbookpublishing.ie. Gmail, Yahoo or a look-alike address? It's not us.
How the Scam Usually Works
- Someone gets in touch claiming to be our editor, publisher, or an agent linked to us.
- They praise your writing and promise a publishing deal or partnership.
- Once you trust them, they ask you to pay for "required" services, certificates, processing fees or contracts.
- They may send fake contracts or letters with our name, logo or staff names, often as screenshots or unofficial files.
None of this comes from us. If it happened to you, you're not alone, and it's not your fault.
What We Will Never Do
- Charge you to read, review or consider your manuscript.
- Ask for payment, bank details or financial information during a manuscript review.
- Text you without your written consent.
- Let outside agencies sell services "on our behalf".
Red Flags to Watch For
- The email doesn't end in @dublinbookpublishing.ie, or uses a look-alike address.
- You're pushed to act fast or pay right now.
- You're asked to pay into an account you don't recognise.
- They only contact you on social media, WhatsApp or by phone, never from our official email.
- There are spelling mistakes, odd formatting, or links and attachments you weren't expecting.
- The offer sounds too good to be true.
Not Sure? Check Before You Act
- Ask for an official email. A real team member can always write to you from an @dublinbookpublishing.ie address.
- Don't click blindly. Hover over links to see where they really go. Skip attachments you weren't expecting.
- Verify payment requests. Call us on the number listed on this website, never a number given in the suspicious message.
- Get advice before you sign. Independent legal advice is always worth considering before entering into a publishing agreement.
- Ask us. We're happy to confirm whether a message is genuine. Contact us using the official details below.
What Is Phishing?
Phishing is when scammers send fake emails or messages to trick you into clicking a link, sharing personal details or sending money.
They often promise a publishing deal or a reward, or claim there's a problem with your account or payment. The goal is to rush you. The best defence is simple: slow down and check.
Fake Author Accounts
Scammers sometimes set up social media accounts pretending to be authors.
Readers:
- Only trust verified accounts where available.
- If something looks off, don't reply. Report the account to the platform.
Authors:
- If someone is pretending to be you, report the account to the platform straight away.
You can report an account through the official help pages:
